ESTIA-Research organisation chart
In 2023, ESTIA-Recherche and AKIRA Technologies created a joint research laboratory, supported by the Communauté d'Agglomération Pays Basque and the Conseil Régional d'Aquitaine, and awarded the LabCom label by the ANR.
ESTIA-Research and the Department of Systems Engineering and Automatics, Faculty of Engineering of Gipuzkoa, Donostia-San Sebastián of the University of the Netherlands (UPV/EHU) are in the process of creating a Cross-Border Cooperation Laboratory, already supported and labelled, since 2023, LTC SAREA Incubator by Campus Euskampus-Bordeaux.

The Estia-Recherche Manifesto
In 2017, through collaborative work and the implementation of a reflective approach to research practices, ESTIA-Research researchers produced their manifesto. In 2024, the manifesto will be updated through collaborative work by the team of researchers.
Preamble : ESTIA-Research is committed to a process of reflection on its research practices, its identity and its missions for the future. This approach is supported by everyone. We are taking this time because we are convinced that it is our responsibility to society to take a step back from the way we do research. We believe that this reflexivity is a guarantee of the quality of the research we carry out. We want to share this approach, which is unusual in the academic world, in a completely transparent way. Through this manifesto, we want to propose our own unpretentious way of doing research, open to criticism and advice.
As a stakeholder in the academic world, we face many challenges. We recognise the compartmentalisation of disciplines and want to propose a truly interdisciplinary approach. The relevance of our way of doing research is measured by embracing a diversity of indicators. While they necessarily include bibliometrics, they are not confined to it. Faced with the need to fund research, we want to avoid any drift. Working in the field of technology, we are vigilant in the face of the risk of a profusion of new technologies, and propose that innovation should be achieved through the integration, arrangement and enhancement of existing technologies, while respecting our environment and individuals.
We are an academic community of a reasonable size. This allows us to be agile, dynamic and responsive. On our scale, interdisciplinarity can be achieved on a daily basis through intellectual exchanges between everyone. This enables us to consider all the technical, environmental, social, societal and organisational dimensions of heterogeneous systems (human, machine or mixed).
We want our research to be responsible. Our scientific questioning must contribute to meeting the challenges expressed, among others, by the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals. With this in mind, we are committed to a process of reflection on the practices of the research profession, and to following the French Charter of Ethics for Research Professions.
We want our research to be useful. Our partnership-based research serves applications and uses. Our work in the field is a source of new scientific questions. We also know how to detach ourselves from these fields of application in order to build up fundamental knowledge.
We believe that the value of our research can be measured by what it produces in a variety of ways:
- our publications, for which we aim to prioritise quality over quantity,
- the patents we register
- our efforts to share knowledge with society, through exhibitions and conferences, and our commitment to innovation in this field (dance conferences, 24 hours),
- the new tools we create and make available to companies, associations and local authorities,
- the support we give to companies, associations and local authorities in terms of innovation and change,
- the training we provide to disseminate recent research developments in our fields,
- supporting the creation of start-ups and associations by our students.
We strive to build a shared vision. When we change and reorganise, we do so with input from everyone and with the well-being of all in mind. By putting well-being at work at the heart of our concerns, we are giving ourselves the means to carry out responsible and committed research, in the service of nature and mankind.
