Abstract
The complexity of socio-technical systems results in the emergence of properties and functions that are difficult to anticipate during the design phase. The principles of human-systems integration (or HSI) advocate the use of new methods to acquire as much knowledge as possible about the system of interest as early as possible in the life cycle in order to detect these emerging properties and be able to adapt the system architecture accordingly.
The existence of these properties is partly due to the difficulty of identifying upstream the characteristic and relevant elements of the system's operational context, which may differ significantly from the system's design, test and integration environment. The notion of context remains poorly defined in the literature, and the tools, methods and models traditionally used in systems engineering do not capture and model this contextual information at a sufficient level of granularity.
The aim of our research is to provide a definition, properties and ontological and methodological elements for the notion of context in design engineering. Our work is undertaken through the case study of air traffic control operations, and perspectives are given as to the interest that our results can bring to the adaptation of these operations to a context of virtualisation of control within remote centres. The results specific to this case study serve as a basis for reflection on their generalisation to all complex socio-technical systems.
